First, make sure that all change of address paper work has been completed. This process should be done well before you actually move. Charge accounts and subscriptions can require several weeks, so keep that in mind. Also, make sure your friends and relatives are aware of your new address. Take care of any banking changes that might need to be made, and contact the utility companies to have them turned off on the correct date and to collect any deposits. The insurance companies you do business with will also need to be contacted, and any necessary changes will need to be made. It's also a good idea to save your phone book to conclude any business involved with your former residence. Go over all the details with your mover. Double check: insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, shipping papers and methods and time of expected payments. Your real estate agent should be an excellent source for recommendations on movers. Also, check with your local Better Business Bureau for any complaints registered against any moving companies you're considering. Take care of any personal items that might be at the repair shop, bank safe deposit box, cleaner's or with a neighbor. If you have children, obtain copies or have school records transferred. Register children in new schools well before the actually move.
